Trying to memorize kanji without knowing radicals is like trying to spell English words without knowing the alphabet. Radicals (部首, bushu) are the fundamental components that make up every single kanji. Learn them first, and every new character becomes a puzzle you can decode.

What Is a Radical?

A radical is a recurring component found in kanji characters. There are 214 traditional radicals, but you only need about 50-60 common ones to cover 95%+ of all kanji you’ll encounter.

Radicals serve two purposes:

How Radicals Unlock Kanji

Once you know radicals, new kanji stop being random strokes. They become combinations of familiar pieces:

(language) = 言 (speech) + 五 (five) + 口 (mouth)
Mnemonic: “Language is speech from five mouths at once.”

(sea) = 氵(water) + 毎 (every)
Mnemonic: “The sea is water that goes on and on, everywhere.”

(hear) = 門 (gate) + 耳 (ear)
Mnemonic: “Press your ear to the gate to hear what’s behind it.”

Radicals as Meaning Predictors

When you see an unknown kanji, the radical often tells you the category:
