1. Introduction
Kanjijo (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.
2. Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect your email address and display name. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the information you authorize those services to share.
Learning Data
We store your learning progress, including lessons completed, review history, proficiency test scores, and SRS scheduling data. This data is essential for the app to function properly.
Device Information
We may collect basic device information such as device type, operating system version, and app version for debugging and improving the app experience.
3. How We Use Your Information
- Provide and personalize the learning experience
- Sync your progress across devices
- Process in-app purchases and subscriptions
- Send important service notifications
- Improve app performance and fix bugs
- Ensure account security
4. Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored securely using cloud infrastructure with industry-standard encryption. Learning data is encrypted both in transit (TLS) and at rest (AES-256). We implement strict access controls to protect your information.
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes. We may share data only in the following cases:
- Service Providers: We use trusted third-party services for cloud storage, analytics, and crash reporting to operate and improve the app.
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law or in response to valid legal processes.
6. Camera & Image Processing
Kanjijo offers an optional OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature that allows you to capture or select images containing Japanese text to search for vocabulary and kanji.
How It Works
- On-Device Processing: All image processing and text recognition is performed entirely on your device using Google ML Kit. No images are uploaded to our servers or any third-party service.
- No Image Storage: Images captured or selected are processed temporarily in memory and are never saved, stored, or transmitted. Once text recognition is complete, the image data is immediately discarded.
- Camera & Photo Library Access: The app requests access to your device’s camera and photo library only when you choose to use the OCR feature. You can deny or revoke these permissions at any time through your device settings without affecting other app functionality.
What We Collect
We do not collect, store, or transmit any images or raw OCR text. The only data retained from this feature is the list of matched vocabulary and kanji IDs (from our local database) if you choose to save the search results as a flashcard collection.
7. Advertising
Kanjijo prioritizes your learning experience above all else. We do not display intrusive, pop-up, or interruptive advertisements at any point during your study sessions.
For free users, advertisements are presented exclusively as opt-in rewarded ads. This means you will only see an ad when you actively choose to watch one — for example, to unlock a new lesson. You are never forced to view an ad, and no advertisements will interrupt your reviews, tests, or any other part of the app.
When you choose to view a rewarded ad, a third-party advertising service (such as Google AdMob) may collect limited device identifiers to serve the ad. This data is handled in accordance with the ad provider’s privacy policy and is never used by Kanjijo for any other purpose.
Premium subscribers enjoy a completely ad-free experience with no rewarded ad prompts.
8. Push Notifications
Kanjijo may send push notifications to your device to support and enhance your learning experience. These notifications are entirely optional and require your explicit consent.
Types of Notifications
If you choose to enable push notifications, you may receive the following types:
- Study Reminders: Personalized reminders based on your SRS (Spaced Repetition System) review schedule to help you maintain consistent study habits and optimize long-term retention.
- Learning Streak Alerts: Encouragement to maintain your daily learning streak and stay motivated.
- Review Due Notifications: Alerts when your scheduled flashcard reviews are due, ensuring timely repetition for effective memorization.
- Account & Service Updates: Important information about your account, subscription status, or significant app updates that may affect your experience.
Your Control Over Notifications
You are in full control of your notification preferences:
- You will be asked for permission before any push notifications are sent to your device.
- You can enable or disable notifications at any time through your device’s system settings (Settings > Notifications > Kanjijo).
- You can customize notification preferences within the app settings to choose which types of notifications you wish to receive.
- Disabling notifications will not affect the core functionality of the app or your ability to study.
Notification Data
When you opt in to push notifications, we collect a device token (a unique identifier generated by Apple’s Push Notification service or Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging) solely for the purpose of delivering notifications to your device. This token does not contain personal information and cannot be used to identify you. We do not use notification data for advertising, tracking, or any purpose unrelated to delivering the notifications you have consented to receive.
9. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your account and all associated data
- Export your learning data
- Opt out of non-essential communications
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at [email protected].
10. Account Deletion
You can request account deletion at any time through the app settings or by visiting our account deletion page. When you delete your account, all personal data and learning progress will be permanently removed within 30 days.
11. Children’s Privacy
Kanjijo is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected data from a child, please contact us immediately.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app or by email. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
