N3 is the turning point. Pass N3 and you can start consuming real Japanese content — news, novels, business emails. It tests roughly 180 grammar patterns, building on N5 and N4.

What Makes N3 Harder
- Similar patterns with different nuances: ように vs ために (both mean “in order to” but usage differs)
- Formal vs casual versions: Many patterns have a polite and plain form
- Written Japanese appears: N3 starts testing written style (である, において)
- 600 kanji required: Without strong kanji skills, you can’t even read the grammar questions
N3 Kanji: The Missing Piece
Many learners fail N3 not because of grammar but because they can’t read the questions fast enough. N3 requires ~650 kanji — that’s where Kanjijo becomes critical:
