The Most Confusing Kanji Pairs

入 / 人nyuu / jin, hitoenter / person入 = left stroke longer (entering), 人 = right stroke longer (standing)
九 / 丸kyuu / gan, marunine / circle丸 has a dot (the circle)
千 / 干sen / kanthousand / dry千 has a slanted top stroke
白 / 百 / 自haku / hyaku / jiwhite / hundred / self百 = one on top (one hundred), 自 = has a nose stroke (self-pointing)
間 / 問kan, aida / monbetween / question間 has 日(sun) inside the gate, 問 has 口(mouth) = asking
初 / 祝sho / shukufirst / celebrate初 has 刀(knife) = first cut, 祝 has 示(altar) = celebration
読 / 続doku / zokuread / continue読 has 言(words), 続 has 糸(thread)

Why Kanji Look So Similar

The Fix: Learn Radicals, Not Whole Characters

When you learn the radicals (building blocks), confusing pairs become obvious:

= 手 (hand radical) + 寺 (temple) → hand at the temple → holding
= 彳 (step radical) + 寺 (temple) → walking to the temple → waiting

The only difference is the left radical. Learn radicals and the difference is clear.
