Why Kanji Look So Similar
- Shared radicals: Many kanji use the same building blocks in different combinations
- Historical evolution: Some kanji diverged from the same ancient character
- Font differences: Some kanji look identical in certain fonts but differ in others
The Fix: Learn Radicals, Not Whole Characters
When you learn the radicals (building blocks), confusing pairs become obvious:
持 = 手 (hand radical) + 寺 (temple) → hand at the temple → holding
待 = 彳 (step radical) + 寺 (temple) → walking to the temple → waiting
The only difference is the left radical. Learn radicals and the difference is clear.
