の vs こと: Japanese Nominalizers Explained

Two small words that turn verbs into nouns - and confuse everyone.

Published April 9, 2026 · 7 min read

Nominalizers turn verbs and sentences into noun phrases. In English, we add “-ing”: “Running is fun.” In Japanese, we use or こと: 走るのは楽しい / 走ることは楽しい. But they’re not always interchangeable.

The Core Difference

= Personal, experienced, concrete, emotional, conversational
こと = Abstract, factual, general, formal, written

When Only こと Works

These fixed expressions always require こと:

PatternMeaningExample
~ことがあるHave experienced ~日本に行ったことがある。(I've been to Japan.)
~ことができるCan do ~漢字を読むことができる。(I can read kanji.)
~ことにするDecide to ~毎日勉強することにした。(I decided to study daily.)
~ことになるIt has been decided ~来月転勤することになった。(It was decided I'll transfer next month.)
~ことはないNo need to ~心配することはない。(No need to worry.)

When Only の Works

These patterns require の:

PatternMeaningExample
Perception verbs (見る, 聞く)See/hear someone doing ~彼が歌うを聞いた。(I heard him singing.)
~のを待つWait for ~バスが来るを待った。(I waited for the bus.)
~のを手伝うHelp with ~引っ越すを手伝った。(I helped with the move.)
~のを止めるStop ~食べるをやめた。(I stopped eating.)

When Both Work (with Nuance)

With のWith ことNuance
泳ぐが好き泳ぐことが好きの: personal feeling / こと: general statement
料理するは楽しい料理することは楽しいの: from experience / こと: as a concept
忘れを忘れた忘れることを忘れたBoth OK for “forgot”

Quick Decision Flowchart

  1. Is it a fixed grammar pattern (ことがある, ことができる, etc.)? → Use こと
  2. Is it a perception/physical verb (見る, 聞く, 待つ)? → Use
  3. Is it a general statement or writing? → Use こと
  4. Is it personal/conversational/emotional? → Use
  5. Still unsure? → こと is the safer choice in formal/written contexts
