Frequently asked questions

How does the listening challenge work?

Your browser says one Japanese word out loud. You see two to four words that differ by a single sound and choose the one you heard. After each answer you can play every option slowly to hear the contrast for yourself.

What is the Daily 5?

Five sounds chosen for the day, the same for every player, with a new set each day at midnight your time. Finishing it extends your streak, and the share button gives you a result like 🟩🟩🟥🟩🟩 without giving away the answers.

Why practise with minimal pairs?

Words that differ by one sound train your ear on exactly the contrast that causes misunderstandings, which is faster than general listening. Read more about long vowels and the small っ and Japanese pitch accent.

Why does the voice sound different on my phone?

The voice comes from your device, so iPhone, Android and computers each sound a little different. If you hear nothing, add a Japanese voice in your system\u2019s speech settings.

Is my streak saved?

Your streak is kept only in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no signup.
