JLPT N4 Kanji List: All 183 Kanji, Grouped the Way They Stick

Every N4 kanji with its on'yomi, kun'yomi, meaning and one word you will genuinely meet, organised into 13 themed study sessions, with the traps, the irregular readings and a six-week plan that actually finishes.

Published September 28, 2026 · 18 min read · Level: N4

The short version: JLPT N4 adds roughly 170 to 185 new kanji on top of N5, bringing you to about 300 in total. The list below contains all 183 N4 kanji taught in the Kanjijo N4 path, each with on’yomi, kun’yomi, meaning and one real word, grouped into 13 study sessions by theme. The hard part of N4 is not the characters themselves but the two-kanji compounds they form (病院びょういん, 質問しつもん, 出発しゅっぱつ), so every character here is presented inside a word.

Level: N4. This page assumes you know hiragana, katakana and the N5 kanji (see the JLPT N5 kanji list). Every example word carries furigana. Tap any kanji in the green strips to mark it as known; your progress is counted at the top of the list and saved in this browser.

Why N4 kanji feel so much harder than N5

Most learners finish the N5 kanji with a quiet sense of victory. About a hundred characters, many of them pictures you could almost guess (山, 川, 木, 人), and every one of them used in a word you already knew. Then N4 begins, and the feeling changes. The characters get denser (曇くも, 験けん, 働はたら), the list nearly doubles, and suddenly the same character seems to have a different reading in every word.

It is worth understanding why, because the cause points directly at the cure.

What changes at N4At N5 most kanji are learned as words on their own: 山 is やま, 水 is みず. At N4, the majority of new characters are met inside compounds, and compounds usually take the on’yomi. So 病 is not a word you say; it lives in 病気 and 病院. The unit of learning has quietly shifted from the character to the word.
Why lists stop workingA flat list of 183 characters with three readings each asks your memory to store roughly 500 isolated sound–shape pairs with nothing connecting them. Memory research has shown for decades that isolated items are forgotten fastest; items tied to meaning and to each other are retained far better.
What works insteadLearn each kanji through one high-frequency word, learn characters in themed groups so they reinforce each other (料理, 病院, 医者), anchor the shape with a mnemonic, and let spaced repetition decide when you see it again. That is the structure of this page, and it is the structure of the Kanjijo N4 path.
An honest note about the number. The JLPT has not published an official kanji list since the test was redesigned in 2010; the Japan Foundation describes each level by what candidates can do rather than by a character inventory. Every N4 list online is therefore a reconstruction from the pre-2010 syllabus, past papers and textbooks, which is why you will see figures from about 165 to 185. The 183 below are the N4 set taught in Kanjijo. If you know them inside real words, you are covered.

Family & the people around you

10 kanji · learn these first · they unlock every self-introduction
家族兄弟姉妹私主夫妻

N5 gave you 父, 母 and 子. N4 completes the family tree, and it does so with a pattern worth noticing: the plain forms 兄, 姉, 妻 are what you say about your own family, while お兄さん and お姉さん are for someone else’s. The kanji are the same; the in-group and out-group rules decide the word around them.

Seasons, weather & time

14 kanji · the kanji of every weather forecast
春夏秋冬風雪晴曇週夕夜方回度

The four season kanji arrive together and are best learned as a set, exactly like the seven weekday kanji at N5. 晴れ and 曇り are the two symbols on every Japanese weather app, and 回 and 度 are the counters for “times” that you will use daily: 一回, 二回, もう一度.

Food, the body & health

19 kanji · the menu, the clinic and the pharmacy
飯肉魚茶酒味料理米野頭顔首心体病院医薬

This group turns menus and clinic signs from pictures into words. Notice how often these characters pair up with each other: 料理, 病院, 医者. Learning them together means every new character arrives already half-inside a word you know.

Everyday verbs

10 kanji · the verbs of a single day
歩走起寝待持止乗降洗

These ten verbs describe an ordinary day from 起きる to 寝る, and most of them are kun’yomi with okurigana. Watch 降: it reads お(りる) when you get off a train and ふ(る) when rain falls, one shape with two unrelated verbs.

降コウお(りる) · ふ(る)descend, precipitate降おりるto get off
洗センあら(う)washお手洗てあらいrestroom
One shape, two verbs. 電車でんしゃを降おります (I get off the train) and 雨あめが降ふります (it rains). Both are “coming down”, which is why they share a kanji, but they are two separate Japanese verbs. The okurigana tells you which one you are reading: りる means get off, る alone means fall. More on how okurigana settles readings in where the kanji ends.

School, study & exams

16 kanji · the vocabulary of learning itself
教室漢文英図館勉強習試験質問題答

You are the target audience for this group. Almost every character here appears inside a two-kanji compound that you will read in instructions on the JLPT paper itself: 問題, 質問, 試験, 答え.

Shopping & money

7 kanji · the till, the bank and the sale sign
売払借貸銀品物

Seven kanji, but they carry a lot of daily Japanese. 借りる and 貸す are the classic N4 pair that learners mix up (borrow versus lend), and 売り場 is on the floor directory of every department store.

KanjiOn’yomiKun’yomiMeaningA word you will actually meet
売バイう(る)sell売うり場ばsales floor

銀ギン—silver銀行ぎんこうbank
品ヒンしなgoods, refinement品物しなものgoods
物ブツ · モツものthing, object買かい物ものshopping
借りる vs 貸す. 友ともだちに本ほんを借かりました = I borrowed a book from a friend. 友ともだちに本ほんを貸かしました = I lent a book to a friend. Both read か, and the particle に is the same; only the verb tells you which way the book travelled. The 貸 kanji contains 貝 (shell, the old symbol for money), a handy reminder that lending is what the one with the money does.
7

Adjectives that come in pairs

18 kanji · learn them as opposites, never alone
広短明暗早速遅重軽悪良低暑寒暖涼近遠

Almost every character in this group has a partner: 明 and 暗, 重 and 軽, 暑 and 寒, 近 and 遠. Learning each pair together halves the effort, because one card reminds you of the other. The two traps are 早い versus 速い and 暑い versus 暖かい, covered below.

The two same-sound traps of N4. 早はやい is early (time), 速はやい is fast (speed): 朝あさ早はやく起おきる (get up early) versus 足あしが速はやい (a fast runner). And 暑あつい is hot weather, while 暖あたたかい is pleasantly warm weather; hot things (tea, a bath) take a different kanji, 熱い, which you will meet at N3. The full family of same-reading kanji is in same reading, different kanji.

Thinking, knowing & working

14 kanji · the kanji of opinions and jobs
思考知意注用仕事働作使建工業

The first half of this group is how you talk about thoughts: 思う, 考える, 知る, 意味. The second half is how you talk about work. 仕事 and 働く alone appear in a huge share of N4 reading passages.

17 kanji · addresses, maps and neighbourhoods
町村区市県都京地池林森石所場園屋堂

This group reads like a map legend. It runs from administrative units (町, 村, 区, 市, 県, 都) through nature (池, 林, 森) to buildings (屋, 堂, 園). If you can read this group, you can read a Japanese address and most of a station map.

Movement & change

13 kanji · open, close, start, finish, send, arrive
運転送通進集切開閉始終死去

Most of these kanji describe something moving or changing state, and several come in pairs again: 開 and 閉, 始 and 終. 開 and 閉 are also the two buttons in every Japanese elevator, which makes them some of the most useful characters on this page.

The elevator test. Japanese elevators label their door buttons 開 (open) and 閉 (close), often with no arrows. Both sit inside the gate radical 門. The difference is what is inside the gate: 開 has two hands lifting the bar, 閉 has 才 locking it. Learn them now and you will never again hold the door shut on someone.

Building-block kanji

17 kanji · small characters that appear in hundreds of words
親色特別洋和世界正不急有無民光服着

This group is abstract, but it pays back more than any other. 不 alone negates dozens of words (不便, 不安, 不足), 特別 and 特に are everywhere, and the pair 洋 and 和 sorts the whole of Japanese life into Western-style and Japanese-style.

The irregular readings N4 loves to test

Some words take a reading that belongs to the whole word rather than to its characters. Japanese calls these 熟字訓 (jukujikun), and a handful of them built from N4 kanji appear on N4 papers again and again. Learn them as single units; decoding will not help.

WordReadingMeaningWhy it catches people
明日あしたtomorrowAlso あす (formal) and みょうにち (very formal). Neither character reads あ or した anywhere else.
部屋へやroom部 is normally ぶ and 屋 is normally おく or や.
八百屋やおやgreengrocerLiterally “800 shop”, for the many goods it sells; the reading is fixed.
風邪かぜa cold (illness)Same sound as 風 (wind); the second kanji is silent in the reading.
果物くだものfruit物 normally reads もの or ぶつ, but 果 never reads くだ elsewhere.
時計とけいclock, watch時 is normally じ or とき.
昨夜ゆうべlast nightAlso readable as さくや; ゆうべ is the everyday one.

For the full story of why kanji have multiple readings at all, see on’yomi vs kun’yomi, and for the special readings that run all the way to N1, special kanji readings.

A six-week plan that actually finishes

WeekGroupsNew kanjiFocus
11 · 224Family, seasons and time. Start easy and build the habit.
23 · 429Food, body and daily verbs. Read a menu and a clinic sign by Sunday.
35 · 623School and shopping. Drill 借りる and 貸す as a pair.
47 · 832Adjective pairs and thinking verbs. Always learn opposites together.
59 · 10 · 1138Places, media and movement. The heaviest week, but also the most concrete.
612 · 1337Building blocks. Then spend the remaining days on review only.

Thirty kanji a week sounds like a lot, but it is about four or five a day. The number that matters is not how many you add but how many you keep, and that depends almost entirely on review timing. A character reviewed just before you would have forgotten it is strengthened far more than one reviewed too early or too late; this is the spacing effect, one of the most reliably replicated findings in memory research.

漢
The same 183 kanji, in the app. Kanjijo’s N4 path teaches exactly this set, four characters per lesson, each with an exclusive mnemonic for its shape and another for its reading, every related word with furigana, native audio and example sentences, and an SRS engine that schedules each review for you. Put the N4 kanji on your lock screen and home screen widgets, answer a question straight from the interactive test widget without opening the app, and when you meet one of these characters on a real sign, the OCR scanner reads it and shows you its lesson.

Check yourself — six N4 readings

Pick the correct reading of the bold word.

1

病院 = びょういん, hospital. Both kanji take their on’yomi inside the compound; びょうき is 病気, illness.

2

降る = ふる, to fall (rain). お is for 降りる, to get off.

3

部屋 = へや, a jukujikun reading that belongs to the whole word.

4

一 + か sound → いっかい. The small っ appears before か, さ, た and ぱ-row sounds.

5

Lending is 貸す. 借りる is borrowing.

6

速い = はやい, fast in speed. 早い is also はやい but means early.

Quick reference

How many kanji for JLPT N4?
About 170–185 new kanji on top of N5, roughly 300 in total. There has been no official JLPT kanji list since 2010; Kanjijo’s N4 set contains 183.
Best learning order
Themed groups that form words immediately: family, seasons and time, food and health, daily verbs, school, shopping, adjective pairs, thinking and work, places, media, movement, building blocks.
Biggest N4 traps
借りる (borrow) vs 貸す (lend); 早い (early) vs 速い (fast); 降りる (get off) vs 降る (fall); counter sound changes such as 一回 いっかい and 一週間 いっしゅうかん.
Irregular readings to memorise
明日 あした, 部屋 へや, 八百屋 やおや, 風邪 かぜ, 果物 くだもの, 時計 とけい, 昨夜 ゆうべ.
Realistic pace
About 30 kanji a week (4–5 a day) finishes N4 in six weeks, provided reviews are spaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

About 170 to 185 new kanji on top of the roughly 100 needed for N5, so around 300 in total. The exact number varies between lists because the JLPT has not published an official kanji list since the test was redesigned in 2010. The Kanjijo N4 set contains 183 kanji.

Learn them in themed groups that immediately form words, not in stroke-count or dictionary order: family, then seasons and time, food and health, daily verbs, school and exams, shopping, adjective pairs, thinking and work, places, media, movement and change, and finally abstract building-block kanji such as 不, 特, 自 and 以. Learn opposites such as 明 and 暗 or 開 and 閉 together.

About six weeks at 30 new kanji a week, which is four or five a day, provided reviews are spaced so that each kanji comes back just before you would forget it. Learners who add kanji faster than they review them usually lose most of them within a month.

The ones most often tested are 明日 (あした), 部屋 (へや), 八百屋 (やおや), 風邪 (かぜ), 果物 (くだもの), 時計 (とけい) and 昨夜 (ゆうべ). These are jukujikun, readings that belong to the whole word rather than to its individual characters, so they must be memorised as units.

Both are read はやい. 早い means early in time (朝早く起きる, to get up early) and 速い means fast in speed (新幹線は速い, the shinkansen is fast). A useful check: if you could replace the word with 'early', use 早; if 'quick' or 'fast-moving', use 速.
