Japanese verbs are unusually well behaved. There are exactly two regular classes and two irregular verbs — no gendered agreement, no person, no number, no irregular past tenses to memorise one by one. Once you know which class a verb belongs to, every form follows from a rule.
Drop the final る and attach the ending. 食べる → 食べます, 食べない, 食べた, 食べて. Nothing else changes, ever.
The final syllable moves around its row of the kana chart depending on the ending. 読む sits on the ま-row: 読まない (あ-row), 読みます (い-row), 読む (う-row), 読めば (え-row), 読もう (お-row). That sliding is what “godan” — five rows — refers to.
Use the ない form. ない on an あ-row syllable means godan (読まない, 買わない); ない straight onto the stem means ichidan (食べない, 見ない). The popular shortcut of checking for いる/える endings works most of the time but fails on nine common verbs — 帰る, 入る, 走る, 切る, 知る, 要る, 限る, 滑る, 減る — which look ichidan and conjugate as godan. This tool marks all nine.
These are the part worth memorising as a block, because they are the same for both forms: う・つ・る → って, む・ぶ・ぬ → んで, く → いて, ぐ → いで, す → して. Swap て for た and で for だ and you have the plain past. The one exception in the entire system is 行く → 行った.
Ichidan: drop る, add ます (食べる → 食べます). Godan: move the final syllable to the い-row and add ます (読む → 読みます, 買う → 買います, 待つ → 待ちます). Irregulars: する → します, 来る → 来ます (read きます).
The ない test. ない on an あ-row syllable = godan (読まない). ない directly on the stem = ichidan (食べない). Watch the nine fake-ichidan godan verbs: 帰る, 入る, 走る, 切る, 知る, 要る, 限る, 滑る, 減る.
う・つ・る → って · む・ぶ・ぬ → んで · く → いて · ぐ → いで · す → して. Ichidan verbs just swap る for て. The only exception is 行く → 行って.
